shinsekai yori episode 19 pic 45

I don’t have much to say as a preamble beyond that I am dropping Oreshura because I do not care for the two new characters, among other issues the show has, and I am dropping Little Busters again since it is still going nowhere.  I am proud to say that Shinsekai Yori has finally gotten first place, thanks to a fiend, and I am sad to say that Magi can’t seem to break into the top five yet. Sasami-san has gotten a little bit more watchable, and although it is far from great there were hints of brightness. After a pretty funny episode last week, Vividred Operation went back to being just ok again, while Hagani got back into my top ten by making shopping for birthday presents amusing.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure-

Jojo episode 19 pic 45

Stroheim is immortal, isn’t he?

How do they do it every single week? Jojo continues to be one of the best show I am watching despite nearly all scenes being about ridiculous fights. The fight with Cars wasn’t even my favorite part of this episode though, (except for the parts where Ceasar and Jojo snip at each other like a married couple, that is.) It was all about the scene where Jojo gets restless and trips a cat. Thank you, Jojo. I needed to see that. I don’t know what Ceasar is thinking though, trying to go after Cars and Wham in broad day-light in that mansion doesn’t seem like a great idea.

Space Brothers-

Go get him!

Go get him!

The two that came to the rescue  took too long dwelling on joking with Hibito and I was nervous that they were going to let poor rolled up Damien freeze to death. Fortunately, he is apparently going to be ok despite having a bad case of frost-bite. They might have hurried it up a little, though, geez. I think I have cried all 44 times this anime has been on, that must be some kind of record.  I don’t care what Mutta or Hibito are doing it always gets to me, maybe it is the soundtrack or something, because I can’t keep the tears from coming out and my emotions from bubbling up until I am a gigantic mess while watching this. All that stuff about Brian Jay was incredibly moving of course, but so is everything about my Space Brothers. What a great series this is!

Zetsuen no Tempest-

vividred op ep 7 pic 28

Fruit! Fruit! Fruit!

Tempest has been pompously stringing us along with the same questions the entire time: What the hell are the Tree of Genesis and Exodus, and where do they come from? Who killed Aika? and also Who is The Mage of Exodus? I should be sick of wanting to know the answers to these same questions after all this time, yet here I am, still happily watching it. That is probably because it gets the right balance between the drama and humor of the entire situation, and I enjoy all the little moments as well. At this point the romance and comedy are so enjoyable that the more serious questions aren’t even what I am liking the most about this show anymore.

Akb0048 Next Stage-

akb0048 next stage ep 7 pic 39

The most fascinating part of this series, is the fact that the idols don’t get to remain themselves if they become members,  but merely have to fit the soul of a previous member, as in sort of become someone else in order to meet the fan’s demands. After being mysteriously “chosen” by an unseen oracle’s magic they are transformed, and even though all the girls are friends they still talk about being rivals and go through hell pretty much to achieve a dream which essentially adds up to erasing yourself and being a slave. I would hate the show if not for the fact that all the characters are totally sympathetic, even though they are being used here.

You know what would be awesome? Aladdin and Alibaba need to come along and save these girls!

Robotics;Notes-

robo;notes episode 17 pic 3

Gah! Another club is being disbanded, and like I care?!

Eh, the latest developments with that poorly developed character dying and the accident haven’t really done anything to improve Robotics;Notes, in my opinion. I thought that it was doing pretty well before it added unnecessary drama,  when it was more focused on the conspiracies and robot building, and Frau, personally. Better than it is now, with the mess it currently is in because it is simply began trying to do too much and got carried away. Sometimes simple is more powerful.   Too bad, because there are many charming traits if it could focus on any one of them without getting distracted.

This Osaka Momma Needs a Break,That’s How It Is!

boku no imouto osaka okan episode 9 pic 6

I am all out of writing ideas right now! Change of plans:

You may have noticed that I have been inconsistent in general about posting. Basically, I am not having very much fun keeping up with episodic posts. I have decided to quit trying to review shows episodically. There is something really grueling and pointless about trying to find things to say about one show, week after week. I have run out of things to say about Chihayafuru, for instance! I’m done with trying to do that.

I am also going to take a break for another week or two from posting, until I get my inspiration for writing about anime back. I just have not been very enthusiastic as I used to be and I need some time to regroup so that when I return I am able to write something I like, and you will have a chance of liking it more if I am not burned out.

vividred op ep 7 pic 1

I will continue to do an episode ratings post once a week, (I’ll get episode 7 ratings up before my break) since that isn’t very much trouble and allows me to say something about everything I am watching. Other than that, when I do write a post it will be because I have something I want to say in that moment.  I certainly won’t be trying to keep up a schedule I can’t manage anymore. I want to write for the love of it. If I want to write about something that happens in an episode, I will, but I don’t want to be restricted from writing about a different anime if I choose, or obligated to keep on blogging a show I’ve run out ideas for.

The gist of this post is:

1. I need a break

2. No more episodic reviews, yay!

3. Chihayafuru, I will only write about you when I feel like it.

4. I am off finding writing motivation, I’m totally not too busy reading Hyperion or anything.

I can’t believe the season is already at the half-way mark, I feel like I just wrote the first impressions yesterday. The speed at which it is flying by is possibly a good thing considering how poorly this season’s original shows are doing against sequels and ongoing stuff from fall. I actually can’t wait to move on to spring, and get this long, sickly, troublesome winter behind me! Perhaps the only two Winter shows that have started to really resonate with me, are  Dokidoki! Precure. I can’t fail to mention Dokidoki has had some kind of effect since I had one dream about it already!

Psycho Pass-

psycho pass episode 16 pic 14

We’ve come full circle to the dramatic scenery we started in at  episode 1. Everything has built up quite effectively to this moment, and due to the tight action and thoughtful drama here, I feel Psycho Pass deserves first place, just for the fact that it made events and consequences come together so smoothly, even if they do sometimes seem less original than some of the ideas in say, Shinsekai Yori. I think I clearly have a favorite character in Shusei, as well..which leads to my rage after episode 16, Why?! why me?!!

Shinsekai Yori-

shinsekai yori episode 18 pic 3

I really don’t know how to describe Shinsekai Yori accurately without simply calling it beautiful. I will remember this show long after it is over. The reason it has never been number one yet, and usually doesn’t get into my top three, is not because it isn’t great. It tends to hold back more than the other series, I am really waiting for it to unleash itself still. This episode was a good step in that direction, as the suspense that has been slowly building all this time is about to boil over. I wouldn’t be shocked if the next few episodes are some of the best.

Magi-

magi episode 17 pic 53

They are always standing right behind you watching, so it is all cool.

I am a sucker for shonen when it is at its most sentimental and heroic, and touches on deep topics like the passing of loved ones the way this episode did. The whole “people may die but they are watching over us,” thing isn’t new, or anything, but I can’t help but be comforted by how Magi handled such a sensitive issue and managed to make it somehow not depressing, or stupid. With the help of the compassionate yet stronger Aladdin, who has just gained his wisdom of Solomon and powered up.  I think this show does succeed on more than just a scenery level, as well, the characters are some of the more sympathetic and love-able ones of the past couple seasons, even though it has still not done anything so over the top as to break into my top five, it is a matter of it craft being weaker than some of the other shows I am watching, if it was refined some more it would be almost perfect.

Vividred Operation-

vividred operation episode 6 pic 4

Whoever is coming up with this stuff is having  fun making it addictive/finding new ways to show us some underage butt. I am having ridiculous fun watching this show even with the butt overload. The mad scientist grandfather’s inventions in episode  include a swimsuit that expands into a balloon as you wear it, and an android melee bear. It seems highly likely it is on crack, but I like it. This was the kind of episode, much like episode 2 that just keeps on raising the stakes and topping itself as far as absurdity goes. This was actually probably one of my favorite comic episodes to watch this week, and that is why Vividred Operation  broke into my top ten episodes of the week.

vividred operation episode 6 pic 33

Haganai Next-

boku wa tomodachi episode 6 pic 1

This episode wasn’t as strong as the past couple weeks, and some of it came across as forced. I didn’t like how Sena was supposed to be so dumb she would believe that when Yozora told her fortune she could honestly still believe she wasn’t lying, given her track record of fooling Sena into doing crazy stunts all the time. Come on, would Sena really fall for something so blatantly made up at this point. Just how slow am I supposed to believe she is, and would t really be fair to pick on someone with such a low IQ?  I don’t really like the whole maid dress up thing either, except for the part where Sena insists that she has not been to maid cafes, even though she makes such a good maid-waitress.

Problem Children are Coming from Another World Aren’t They?-problem children ep 6 pic 2

The best thing about this show is kuro usagi, and kuro usagi’s dance in the ET. I could watch that over and over. This show is only what, like, ten episodes long? I don’t think it has time to go anywhere, so I am just trying to enjoy it in the moment.  For what its worth, it has been better than some of the shows I started with higher expectations for, while it is mostly just a good distraction in between heavier anime.

Tamako Market-

tamako market episode 6 pic 6

Right now, Tamako Market is not really a very deep show. It is just an unabashedly cute, and happy-go-lucky one.  I love the chill record store dude and his sayings and there are things that still appeal to me in its general vibe. I can’t say that Tamako herself is very bright and neither are most of the adults of the market, considering they thought the bunny market could be haunted even though Shiori quickly figured out it wasn’t, without trying very hard.  Even so, cuteness and a friendly nature isn’t enough to gloss over the fact of Dera having worn off his welcome a while go, and since it doesn’t have a clear direction I am pretty sure I will totally forget it once it ends.  Unless some new characters from Dera’s island change my mind..

Sasami-san@Unmotivated-

sasami san episode 6 pic 3

I am not entirely sure what Sasami-san@Unmotivated wants to be. It sure is nice to look at, but this latest development with the mom returning from the dead hasn’t pushed this show from just pretty into something bigger. To be fair, I was losing interest a while ago I just wanted to give it a shot to pick up and it hasn’t really improved. I guess I am at the point where I may as well see it through, but I would not advise anyone else to start watching this show.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo-

sakurasou no pet na kanojo ep 18 pic 13

Yeah, it is really bad.

For now let’s put aside the sad fact that now Nanami will be cock-blocking Mashiro and getting none of her own from Sorata for the remainder of the series, and talk about some more issues this show has. Although Sorata always, always deserves to be hit. I can’t believe what a tool he is. “and I couldn’t concentrate because of Misaki!” Jin is the worst character in the show, in my opinion. Besides the guy he is beating up. I really hated this episode, as it put all of Sakurasou’s flaws in the most obnoxious light possible . Maybe it was the grating melodrama. I’m pretty sure I had it up to here after the loud fist-fight between Sorata and Jin. A stagnant and unchanging relationship that never made progress shouldn’t be trying to be resolved out of nowhere with a loud, clumsy fist-fight.

Chihayafuru Episode 31: Everyone Wins

chihayafuru season 2 episode 6 pic 32

It is still weird seeing one side in traditional dress, and the other in t-shirts.

Who cries the most in this episode: Chihaya, after Arata sends her a text. Taichi is doomed.

Chihaya’s uses her neat trick of  hearing a sound before it is read, allowing her to steal cards at super speed. It takes Amakusa awhile to figure out what she is doing, but Sado knows exactly what is up. After Porky’s early loss, the other four matches come down to the luck-of-the-draw, but the only way for Misuzawa to win is to attack their opponent’s side. Chihaya decides to go on the attack, which cements Taichi’s determination to do the same, this shakes up Retro’s confidence. No matter who wins the tournament, both teams still get to go the nationals. Sumire, Akihiro and his little brothers all join the karuta society, and Arata texts Chihaya asking how she felt about her match.

chihayafuru season 2 episode 6 pic 35

haha, porky.

In any case, if anyone else out there felt like some of the karuta rules Hukou put into play during this game were complex to understand, I have to agree there. While the show does a great job explaining things and catches us up to a game we don’t understand as much as it possibly can, there are always going to be things about how karuta works, and tactics that I miss. Not knowing Japanese is a big handicap in that regard. It doesn’t prevent me from generally understanding what is going on enough to follow (in a somewhat crude sense sometimes, albeit) and it doesn’t get in the way of my enjoyment of the series, and that is a relief.

chihayafuru season 2 episode 6 pic 19

I don’t think the audience in these things ever wears any other expression, as much as the mouth-hanging-open-in-blank-eyed-shock look.

No, I can’t keep track of where every card is, and what every card that is taken means, and so on, and if that was a requirement I would have given up a long time ago! I am laid back about following Karuta when watching Chihayafuru, in the same way I was laid back when following the basketball when watching Kuroko’s Basketball. I have no idea if they stretch belief in Chihayafuru the way Kuroko did, but I wouldn’t really care if that was so.

chihayafuru season 2 episode 6 pic 2

That isn’t the last time someone will equate Chihaya to non-human, I think.

I love how Chihaya’s extremely good ear causes Amakasa to wonder whether she is really human, I’ve often thought “Is she human?” When it comes to Chihaya, and I think this match only further resolves that she is an alien in many ways. Hell, just look at how she instantly falls asleep after a karuta match, yet can always seem to open her eyes the moment she needs to join the conversation again. It is only a small detail of her personality, but it illustrates why she is such a likeable, and fun character to watch in action.

chihayafuru season 2 episode 6 pic 25

Nice, Desktomu.

Chihaya has grown as a karuta player so much in such a short time, and so has everyone else on the Misuzawa team, including Kana and Desktomu. So even though Hukou’s experience ends up paying off in the end, even the ace Amakusa has to admit that they are not the best team anymore, since he only moved when he felt Chihaya moving to take his card, and Chihaya has the better senses of the two by far, as well as a greater drive to be the best, I think. Hukou winning despite being lazy about karuta, is interesting, because it proves that Mizuzawa deserved to win just as much if not more than Hukou, and the next time they meet it will be a real challenge for Hukou to pull off a second victory.  I doubt that will even be possible for them, given just how far behind Misuzawa they seemed beyond knowing certain veteran strategies to secure a win, that Misuzawa did not know.

chihayafuru season 2 episode 6 pic 33

The “are you thinking what I’m thinking?” face.

I’ll admit that Hukou’s and especially Amakusa’s willingness to fall back on “easy” plans in order to win are a more boring way to play, in my mind, than to challenge yourself as much as possible and make it harder on you, rather than your opponent. In a way, I feel that them employing these kind of strategies is inevitably only going to weaken them as a team, in the long run, since although you can fool a team at the level of Misuzawa once, you would be hard pressed to fool them with the same tricks twice. Hukou had better start relying on their skills a bit more in future. If playing Chihaya isn’t a wake up call for them, I don’t know what is.

chihayafuru season 2 episode 6 pic 5

I also don’t think we’ve ever seen a reader who is so personally invested in what was going on before, since Hukou was his team and he was their previous ace. It is cool to see what is going on in the reader’s head while he watches Amakusa deal with the newest karuta monster, Chihaya. I do feel pretty bad for Porky in this episode, he is a little hard on himself after losing his match, I mean, it must happen to every karuta player at some point. He doesnt need to call himself “Pathetic,”  that is harsh.

chihayafuru season 2 episode 6 pic 21

Not sure why he said that.

One minor issue for me is how Amakusa thinks, “I might be small, but I can still defend my cards against a girl.” What the hell? If any show should know better than to discriminate against someone because of gender, it should be this one. Yet we have that one guy thinking Kana was “boob girl,” and even Kana seemed to know what he was thinking and had a saucy reply regarding her boobs during the match in the previous episode. I doubt anyone would be thinking about their boobs that much when they have more important things to think about, and even if Kana does think about her larger than average chest, focusing on something else about her character would still be better, in my opinion since boobs get too much focus in other shows to begin with. This one doesn’t need to start doing it too.

chihayafuru season 2 episode 6 pic 57

Taichi channeling Chihaya insanity.

To end on a good note: I am happy to see that Sumire is becoming more willing to put effort into helping the team, by joining the karuta society. It also looks like Kana and Desktomu are not just going to take a backseat to the A and B players, as this episode shows that they are learning some skills of their own and contributing to their team’s success as much as anyone else is! Also, Go Taichi! I think I like him best when he is on fire, and on the attack with that crazy look in his eyes!

Errant Princess Says,

greenfairy

Another awesome episode, it is striking that when I compare how well Chihayafuru season 2 is already doing this early on compared to shows like Psycho Pass and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure which are already seventeen or so episodes in, that Chihayafuru can hold its ground just fine even against the best that the fall 2012 season had to offer.

Chihayafuru Episode 30: A Multitasking Master

chihayafuru episode 5 pic 8

He has a good point.

Sumire’s scouting reveals that Hukou’s plan to beat Misuzawa is to pit strong players against weak ones and have an easy to win match. Retro decides to make he wants to win fairly instead of cheating, and matches equal players against each other instead. The child-like president Amakusa wonders why anyone would want to put in such effort to win. Sudo returns as reader, causing Hukou to have to keep up to not anger the s inside him. Misuzawa’s coach proves useful despite her lack of karuta knowledge. Chihaya tries to copy Shinobu’s style, while information overload gets the best of porky.

chihayafuru episode 5 pic 3

Of course they put Retro with Porky’s sister.

I’m sorry it took so long to get this post up. I was glad to see the intensive competition taking center stage this time, and  the latest group tournament against retro’s group is the most suspenseful thing season 2 has had to offer us yet. It is hard to appreciate just how much skill it probably requires in order to do what Chihayafuru does all the time, like a machine. It might seem effortless, but it must, like a good karuta match, really sweat to make it happen.

chihayafuru episode 5 pic 22

Which version does she aspire to be, skinny or chubby?

More than any others so far, this episode has reminded me of what I most respected about season 1, the depth this series goes into, and the way it handles explaining all the rules is unique. It doesn’t just explain the rules, either. No two people see anything alike. No two players understand the cards or their meaning in the same way. Each person learns at their own speed, in their own special way, with their own experiences defining just what becomes important to them, and what they struggle with. The fact that it can do all this and usually end on a cliffhanger that leaves me wanting more, is freaking impressive.

chihayafuru episode 5 pic 9

There is also another talent Chihayafuru has that I didn’t really realize until now: Multi-tasking. Seriously. The ability this show has to look at karuta from every possible angle, through each player’s perceptions, filtered through each character’s personalities and playing styles while juggling everything else it has to do at the same time, is insane. All that, plus it always considers  whatever the obstacles the particular person has had to overcome, and it takes it upon itself to examine even things you would never imagine being integral to the play. That level of attention to character’s emotions and thought processes is incredible and rare in any show, let alone a card game show.

chihayafuru episode 5 pic 16

One of the things that is more obvious when watching a group tournament than an individual match is that one of this series prominent strengths is multi-tasking point of view and showing us a bird’s-eye, omniscient view of everything that is going on. None of this could have been so amazing if we had only been in Chihaya’s perceptions, or it didn’t make such an elaborate effort to have each layer unfold like this, until all the myriad layers are unraveled and everyone’s strengths and weaknesses are thoroughly examined. It is such an expert at making even the smallest thing seem interesting, that I don’t even notice if a character I don’t particularly care for takes up the lime-light. This is because Chihayafuru could take a loathsome person and make them seem wonderful if it wanted to, merely because it is so skilled at creating sympathy in you for every single player in every single match no matter who they are.

chihayafuru episode 5 pic 11

I think that is why it is so successful and so brilliant. For two reasons, really. The information flow is coming from so many different places, one moment you are in Retro’s head and the next in an audience member’s head. You never get bored or tired of hearing about anything because the view is kept fresh and shuffled enough that you can feel you are being given a broad enough knowledge. Yet it is also smart enough not to be too scattered and knows when to slow down and let you simmer with one character’s thoughts too. This moderation is working  in Chihayafuru’s favor.

Best episode of season 2 yet!

Dokidoki! Precure Episode 2: Love, Love, Loooove!

dokidoki precure episode 2 pic 64

What are they putting in that precure power?!

This week’s selfish came out of someone’s desire to cross the street without waiting! Ira, The white-haired boy who created the last selfish, returns, and changes some kid into a street-light with the ability to freeze people and cars in place. I guess I am having a hard time seeing such mundane and petty desires as truly evil, but I can be patient and wait for the villains to tempt people to do more Machiavellian things later.  The great part about this episode, is when Mana’s best friend Rikka sneaks up behind the street-light and pushes the button.

the one time pressing the button was a good idea.

the one time pressing the button was a good idea.

I think I get the picture here, the formula doesn’t appear to be very complex: A selfish appears/messes with an innocent person/Mana defeats it, (excuse me) purifies the selfish so it can join the human race again. The days work is over and everyone is happy, until the next attack.. I am finding what is essentially my first experience with Pretty Cure to be a fun one, despite any instinctual sarcasm on my part. If I sound as though I am putting it down don’t worry that is just my nature to sound underwhelmed, I don’t hate it.

dokidoki precure episode 2 pic 37

Ok, we’ll take it.

I couldn’t help but think the villains would be better served to try a different town where precure aren’t nearby and can’t come to rescue, if they really want to accomplish their goals. Like, why is the street so close to Mana’s school anyway, was it all part of the plan to let Mana beat them by causing chaos right next to where she studies? Than again, there would be no show if they were smart like that. Another thing I found difficult to believe was when the other students witnessed strange shit happen before their eyes, and waved it off like, “Well, as long as you are alright Mana we won’t ask any questions about giant crabs and the damage to the building.” Such blind acceptance is a little frightening.

dokidoki precure episode 2 pic 38

I would have fallen in love with this show, if one of those guys had scowled, crossed his arms and said, “Excuse me, but I won’t let this rest until I know the truth!” Walked off and proceeded to spy on all of Mana’s activities from there on.

I am typically a fan of mahou shoujo, starting with Sailor Moon all the way to Madoka. Precure seems to fall somewhere to the left of Madoka, as it shares some visual affinities with it, but with more of an emphasis right now on exaggerated comedy and a big dose of corny sentimentality. When Cure Heart purifies the selfish it turns all pink with hearts and yells, “Love, love loooove!” At which point the Beatles “All You Need is Love,” starts playing in my head.

I knew those fairies were sinister.

I knew those fairies were sinister.

For all I know it gets much darker later, Cure Swords scenes suggest it will, and I am hoping it does! For instance, Cure Sword asks Mana/Cure Heart if she will be able to protect her loved ones, and suggests that the role of a precure is full of peril. That could mean anything, though. In my first impression I didn’t mention that Mana has a best friend Rikka who seems like a nice person. I forgot Rikka last time because she didn’t really do much in the first episode, or at least my memory totally didn’t think she did. This time she appears long enough to worry about Mana, try to help her out, and to tell a story about a happy prince statue who reminds her of Mana. Both Mana and the prince in Rikka’s story, have  a habit of displaying excessive kindness even when it hurts them.

dokidoki precure episode 2 pic 52

She kept it to herself for one episode? That is pretty good.

I found the fact that Mana’s urge to share about what happened last time won’t let her get away with not telling her best friend to be realistic. Most young girls are not exactly masters of secrecy and subterfuge, after-all. How is Mana going to not just blab her secret to everyone though, considering her transparent personality? It seems like she is one of those people who can’t keep a secret, for better or worse. Mana is fun to watch, which is all that really matters.

dokidoki precure episode 2 pic 34

She asks excellent questions.

Perhaps she only has the compulsion to tell Rikka, either way it isn’t really a problem if Mana is too honest, I’m sure she can still carry out her work just fine, considering Rikka found out the truth and nothing happened to her yet. This gig doesn’t  require any great level of subtlety, therefore Mana can probably not expect much in the way of consequences. Except not being able to find her normal clothes, that is.

dokidoki precure episode 2 pic 10

Characters seem cuter upside down, somehow.

"books are not just something you read words in, they are also a tool to adjust your senses."

“books are not just something you read words in, they are also a tool to adjust your senses.”

Psycho Pass-

A number of little details have kept Psycho Pass at number 1 for me. There was the fact that I just love the way Shogo Makishima converses about literature, and why reading paper books is better than downloading just the words. He keeps such a cool, philosophical head about him all the time while carrying out evil schemes to destroy sibyl that I have to admire that.  Besides, Shusei’s comment that they ought to run over the rioting crowds with the car, was a classic suggestion and perfect evidence of what someone whose hue is clouded, really thinks about. Man, my hue would be so clouded.

shinsekai yori ep 17 pic 26

such a sneaky creature.

Shinsekai Yori-

I don’t talk much about Shinsekai Yori, it is the kind of show I tend to brood over in my head rather than discuss. Overall, this show has developed the world and story so much better than Psycho Pass has to be quite honest, and finally it seems like it is really starting,  after the longest build up ever! Wow, that intense world building is really paying off right about now. The characters are still kind of vague personalities compared to the world and horror around them, but that isn’t really a problem since they aren’t the main focus. Yakumaru is such a great character, too.

Even at its least impressive, Robotics;Notes still has something about it.

Even at its least impressive, Robotics;Notes still has something about it.

Robotics;Notes-

The Airi episode is the closest to extremely mushy and sentimental this show has ever come, I almost felt like I watching Little Busters instead of Robotics;Notes what with the dying little girl melodrama, the kiss thing, and all the “I love snow” stuff. If not for the glimpses of Kimijima Ko I don’t think I would be quite so forgiving here, but I can extend Robotics;Notes which is actually a really good show, some credit and overlook a bit of mush.

oreshura ep 5 pic 47

Terrible naming sense aside, how adorable.

Oreshura-

Hime should not at all detract from the delightful dynamic going on between Eita and the girls. In a harem whether you like the characters enough can go a long way in determining how you will feel about the show itself. Since I genuinely think these characters are more appealing than average and don’t get on my nerves this show is working for me a little more than some of the other series this season. I can see why these girls think highly/are in love with Eita. He is reliable, truly nice, heroic, cute, funny and weird. In short, he is many things most harem leads never are. I hope he can clone himself and prevent the unfortunate need to reject all these girls, even if I know who he will end up with in the end I still wish sometimes everyone else didn’t have to suffer in these things.

sakurasou pet kanojo episode 17 pic 26

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo-

Speaking of suffering, I can’t stand to watch Nanami shoot herself in the foot by liking Sorata and turning down the guy who actually notices her. Just go with someone who won’t crush all your hopes, girl. The Valentine’s day episode was full of clichés, and not really all that I would want from my romance. At least I actually want Mashiro to win, or it would be really disappointing.

Zettai Karen Children and Kotoura-san

I think I am going to go ahead and drop Zettai Karen Children from this list, and replace it with Dokidoki Precure! The loli is the central focus and the story isn’t going anywhere amazing for me. Kotoura-san is also starting to bore me, so I am dropping it too.

Chihayafuru Episode 8: For Fear of Arata!

chihayafuru ep 8 pic 24

It makes total sense to run away from Arata and Chihaya, for entirely different reasons though. You should run from Arata because he is better than you at karuta, and has no empathy if you lose. He will stare down at you through his glasses with his cold blue eyes and make you feel like an ant. You should run from Chihaya because she will stalk you to the ends of the earth, jump you and kidnap you, if you don’t want to be enlisted in her beloved club. You should treat Chihaya with caution because most of all she is kind of psychotic. Arata is just in a league of his own and couldn’t understand how ants must feel.

chihayafuru ep 8 pic 12

Yusei “Porky” Nishida quit karuta after being defeated by Arata, and opted to join the tennis club instead. Chihaya ropes him into joining the club since they need a fifth member to become official. Meanwhile, Taichi is teaching Desktomu and Kana the basics, such as when you can “send” cards to an opponent’s side, but it will take a long awhile before Kana and Desktomu can even handle the sport enough to help the team win. I think Desktomu’s introduction was a little bit more interesting and unpredictable than Nishida’s, considering the attached to his desk angle, and the fact that he had never even played karuta and was a beginner when he joined, it was cool to see someone with no background in karuta find reasons to care.

chihayafuru ep 8 pic 7

Nishida is an old hand at karuta but ran away from the sport when he was little because he was beaten by Arata. He is chased down and tackled by Chihaya when she recognizes him as a former karuta opponent, triggered by seeing him eating pork buns. Hence why she calls him “Porky.” as he ate them as a child as well. Here it actually makes more sense for Chihaya to adamantly want Nishida on their team, but not quite as much fun to watch happen as Desktomu’s intro. Taichi and Chihaya mutually manipulate (they can be quite evil when they want to be!) Nishida into playing  a match against Chihaya to prove to him that he still loves karuta, and is only using tennis as a replacement. So Nishida’s episode is more straightforward and logical in the sense that he is experienced and just needs to be reminded that he really wants to join the karuta team.

chihayafuru ep 8 pic 38

Of course the reason he quit was he was just scared of Arata. It is really crazy how Arata tends to destroy other people’s confidence without even trying, but his level of talent is just that intimidating. The number one thing about this show I find most amusing is that Arata frightens everyone half to death with his god-like abilities, even though he rarely appears on-screen very long. The show has done an excellent job of making it feel like his “presence,” is there even when he is not onscreen, that he is the driving force behind Chihaya’s demonic ambitions.

chihayafuru ep 8 pic 27

At this point it is no surprise that Chihaya is so oblivious to people’s feelings that she nicknames Nishida Porky, and doesn’t stop calling him that even when he objects to the moniker.  That is a running gag through-out the episode, although I am sure Chihaya doesn’t even understand that it might hurt his feelings since “Porky” is unflattering to an overweight  person. Luckily, Nishida seems like a fairly thick-skinned, strong-minded character with enough skills, brains and athleticism that Chihaya’s social idiocy won’t get in his way too much.

An excellent episode, if yet more proof that Chihaya and Taichi are bad people. Nishida is the Salieri to Arata’s Mozart. In all honesty though, Arata probably has a lot of enemies he isn’t even aware of.

Dokidoki! Precure Episode 1: Release the Angry Crab in Your Heart!

dokidoki precure ep 1 pic 42

The darkness in your heart should resemble this.

A word of warning, I have no familiarity with any of the rest of the Precure franchise. There are way too many of them! I saw all of one episode of Heartcatch Precure but put it on hold indefinitely. There is a complaint I want to get out-of-the-way before I continue. I am incredibly sick of shows about idols, or even just the mention of idols reminds me just how over-saturated anime is with it. The only exception for me is that I like Akb0048, despite the recent scandal about the real life member of akb who was caught with a guy, punished for it, and shaved her head as a result. I in no way like the Japanese Idol industry because of things like that,  and almost any other type of music is better than J-pop.

dokidoki precure ep 1 pic 39

The whole reason for this rant was because there is an idol character in the first episode of Dokidoki! Precure, although the entire focus of the series seems to be more of the magical girl persuasion here. The premise is simple, regular girls turn into “pretty cure” magical girls who fight evil creatures called “Selfish.”  The selfish come about when regular people fall prey to their temptations and want to do bad things.

dokidoki precure ep 1 pic 47Villains appear, turn people’s hearts black and monsters materialize out of the blackness of their heart. The sequence in which the antagonist “Ira” turns the boy’s heart black is funny because it is done very dramatically, the boy falls over and a heart is torn out of his chest.

dokidoki precure ep 1 pic 41

I can’t say that I cared much for the main character, Mana Aida, who is a goodie two shoes student council president. She tries to save everybody and  is really obsessive about it to a disturbing degree. Which seems less like goodness and purity to me, and more like a disorder. At one point she retrieves a lost hair accessory for a famous idol. Afterward, she is given a powerful blouse pin by a mysterious blonde man named “Joe?!” who seems to know what is going on.  Later, the accessory, “Cure Lavies” helps her transform via the ugly phone “Lovely Commune” she is given by a pink fairy called “Sharuru.” Usually I am pretty accepting of excessively fruity names and colors for everything in magical girl shows, but this time it is almost too much pink and frilly for me to handle without getting a headache. Perhaps I will need some adjustment, or drugs to take before I watch it, as  I am not yet sold.

dokidoki precure ep 1 pic 49dokidoki precure ep 1 pic 48

Now, the only thing I really want to talk about in this episode is the “Selfish” which in this case is a giant crab that goes on a hilarious rampage in this episode because the human being it has possessed wants to “cut in line.” to get to the top of the clover tower. The episode treats cutting in line like it is the ultimate sin or something, which only makes the crab rampage more hilarious and sympathetic. It seems to me the heroes are just going around preaching against selfishness,  and scolding a giant angry crab for being a giant angry crab  just makes you look silly.

dokidoki precure ep 1 pic 53

I am on the antagonist’s side,” in this case.  I love the angry crab, that is about it. I feel like watching too much pretty cure would probably make me go mad. Be careful! Other than that,  I enjoyed the very beginning, in which a lone precure “Cure Sword” is fighting selfish in a surreal landscape. The surreal kingdom is apparently called “The Trump Kingdom.”  I will watch the next episode to see where it goes, but I don’t know about the rest.

Dokidoki! Precure is a queer one, isn’t it? it seems like it is really trippy and not altogether sane. This episode gets higher points for having an angry crab in it, though.

Winter 2013 Episode 4 Ratings

pyscho pass episode 14 pic 24

He’s just trying to fix society.

To indicate where a series has moved compared to previous ratings, there will now be signs just so you can have an idea how it is progressing relative to last week. +  if it has moved up, and — if it has moved down. If it’s position has changed significantly, meaning it has moved more than three spots in any direction there will be a * by the title. Anything newly added, like Robotics;Notes won’t have any indicator. In the opinions of the episodes below that, I’ve given certain episodes awards.

+ 1. *Psycho Pass episode 14

2. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure episode 16

3. Chihayafuru episode 29 (season 2 episode 4)

4. Space Brothers episode 41

Best Episode

and Biggest Shock

Psycho Pass-

pyscho pass episode 14 pic 30

The only stupid thing is that the officers don’t have backup weapons.

saw a significant rise in the ratings due to its memorable events with the masked criminals fooling the psycho pass system. While some have criticized Psycho Pass saying a society couldn’t realistically be so numbed to violence and even murder itself, that it wouldn’t notice it happening right in front of them, I thought the episode was believable for such a society. The brutality of the scene in which the man beat the woman to death in front of an oblivious group of spectators, sparked enough of a dialogue about it, to put it first in my mind.

*Toughest Bishoujo and

*Made something monotonous fun to watch

Jojo-

Jojo episode 15 pic 4

I don’t even see how Jojo could possibly improve, it is perfect already.

was about the training episode with Lisa Lisa, where Jojo and Ceasar climb up a pillar of death. As usual, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is spot on, brilliant even. I honestly can’t picture it not getting into the top three most of the time, since every episode is practically genius.

*Funniest Episode

Haganai –

haganai episode 3 pic 16

the authentic mangirl

is first because of the roller coaster scene, and the twist at the end. If not for Haganai being wickedly funny..

Oreshura-

oreshura episode 4 pic 32

I think kids with Chuunibyou is hard to make go wrong, as are Jojo parodies.

would have had that one in the bag when Eita and Chiwa get in a fight with a guy who rejected Chiwa on their date.  Watching Eita’s Chuunibyou unleashed was great, but so was seeing Chiwa beat the crap out of those delinquents.

Smartest Bishounens all gathered in one place

Zetsuen no Tempest-

zetsuen no tempest episode 16 pic 16

Yes, we all know the tree of genesis is a killer, but what would its pyscho pass say?

I still think all this being over a bunch of god-like trees is unbelievable silly, but Zetsuen no Tempest somehow pulls it off.

*Best use of Robots and *Most Geeky (both awards are a good thing)

All you need to know about Robotics;Notes- Robots are on a Rampage!

robotics;notes episode 14 pic 26

Um, being the coolest person on planet earth?

Most Needlessly Perverted

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo should know better-

sakurasou pet kanojo episode 16 pic 36

a dreadful example of the trend of the soulless imoutos.

Little sister’s loving their brothers and incest as a thing isn’t normal, you need extraordinary circumstances to justify it! Sasami-san@Unmotivated knows that, at least. (Kotoura-san did have that perverted grandpa but I think I would rather just ignore that one, that and the spanking stuff..)

*Most Improved and *Cutest Moment

I’m going to go with Sasami-san@Unmotivated-

sasami-san@unmotivated episode 3 pic 42

Kamiomi probably cries her tears for her.

It is really less improved and more that I feel I understand it better now. I did think episode 3’s explanations of the reasons for Sasami and Kamiomi’s strange relationship helped improve my opinion of the show, after giving it some thought. With episode 4 I feel I am finally getting into the plot and characters more. It is far from perfect, of course, but I like to award anything that tries to be creative and has a crazy flair. There are moments when it really clicks like at the end when the alien spaceship arrives and the government comes to collect the alien from Tama.

Sasami-san is a living cutest moment.

*Most Affecting, I mean, Emotionally Affecting

Akb0048 Next Stage-

akb0048 next stage episode 4 pic 55

I’ve never seen so many shocked faces.

had me biting my knuckles with the elections and voting for favorite idols ceremony, watching all those cute girls cry and make speeches was truly inspiring. I’m not saying Hibito’s near death experience isn’t also a tear-jerker, but this was beautiful.

*Dumbest Episode and

*Most Rushed Plot

Vividred Operation-

vividred operation ep 4 pic 43

Help! I’m turning into a banana!

is rushing things along alright with the yellow shut-in girl joining the battle against the alone, and it is certainly the dumbest show I’m still watching. How can anyone love a manifestor engine so much? Against all odds I still like it, though, even if nothing beats episode 2 for sheer idiocy.

Little Busters-

is a close second as far as being dumb goes, because the only thing stupider than loving a  manifestor engine with all your heart, is loving a bench.

little busters episode 16 pic 16

Little Busters is now exploring the phenomenon of people who are deeply in love with objects.
